How Much is the Car Insurance of a 17 year Old?

Posted on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 // 0 comment

Having a teen ager who is eager to get his own car may give parents the jitters but it is a reality that sooner or later, that teen age boy or girl will be getting behind the wheel. The question is, how much is the car insurance of a 17 year old? The answer will have to be a big chunk.

Teen agers are considered a big risk for insurance companies, more so if it is a boy. Boys are considered as more of a risk compared to girls of the same age for automobile insurance companies since boys are more prone to accidents than girls. Teen agers are prone to accidents because of inexperience behind the wheel and added to that the lack of maturity on handling stresses on the road as well as peer pressure.

Given that insurance rates for 17 year olds can reach up to an average of $250 a month, any traffic violation will mean much higher rates that even a parent would consider strapping that burly teen ager back on his toddler car seat. A teen ager involved in a DUI offense would also mean automatic revocation of his driver’s license. This is done by most states to deter any teen-ager from drinking and driving.

There are other ways to get a discount on car insurance though. Getting good grades are one of them. Maintaining a high grade point average or being on the Dean’s list would mean that the 17 year old is a responsible young adult, meaning he can be a responsible driver, making him less of a risk for insurance companies. Another saving will be not buying a sports car for that young adult since the make of the car determines the rate of the insurance premium. High horse power with a matching high level of teen ager hormones will definitely raise a red flag for car insurance companies.

How much is the car insurance of a 17 year old? It can be reduced by having an old car or being added to the family’s insurance premium. Maintaining a clean record would mean a lesser insurance premium on his renewal but seldom will insurance companies quote a low insurance rate for a first time car owner.

Any 17 year old teen-ager would then be looking forward to turning 18, looking forward to the rites of passage of being an adult. Sad to say, insurance companies do not consider anyone under the age of 25 as a responsible adult behind the wheel so parents and young adults alike will be expecting higher premiums until he reaches 25. Only then will he be able to enjoy lower insurance rates, that is, if he has maintained a clean record with no traffic violation of any kind.

How much is the car insurance of a 17 year old? Definitely higher than most car insurance coverage and parents and a young adult will be expecting that for the next nine (9) years.
